Rolls-Royce, ChefsFridge join forces to design cold pods to transport Covid-19 vaccines globally

27 July 2021

Rolls-Royce and ChefsFridge Co. have teamed up to develop an innovative, ultra-low temperature pod to transport and store Covid-19 vaccines globally to meet the challenge of vaccinating patients around the world in nearly any environment.

The new ArcticRx system will help bridge the gap in the cold chain currently challenging the global vaccination effort. ArcticRx is a passive, stable, long-term ultra-low temperature (ULT) pod — the first of its kind to support a two-dose vaccine delivery regimen specifically targeting rural, remote and international areas in support of global equitable access and to help share doses as rapidly and quickly as possible.

Allen Barta, Rolls-Royce, Emerging Technologies and Innovation Lead, said, “This new vaccine delivery system developed jointly by Rolls-Royce and ChefsFridge will solve the significant technological challenge of maintaining extremely low vaccine temperatures. Vaccines need to be kept ultra cold and for long enough to transport them worldwide – and not just one, but two doses of vaccines. Rolls-Royce is proud to bring our innovation to bear on this difficult and crucial challenge, and join ChefsFridge in the global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.”

The ArcticRx pod was designed by Rolls-Royce innovators in Indianapolis and developed with ChefsFridge, also based nearby. The collaboration has led to a final design, with three models manufactured and tested. With the ability to scale quickly with funding, ChefsFridge Co. is currently seeking investment and manufacturing partners as the team moves forward to market.

As COVID-19 vaccines began to roll out, gaps were found in the system for transporting and storing the doses of vaccines. Current solutions are still expensive, bulky, and inaccessible to many regions without resources like electricity and ultra-low temperature storage at vaccination sites. Most current shipping coolers are only able to carry one of two rounds of doses at a time, causing logistics and sustainability issues. The ArcticRx is reusable, lightweight, and does not require electricity to maintain stable ultra-low temperatures required for mRNA vaccines.  ArcticRx can be refilled with additional cooling materials.

Rolls-Royce engineers in the company’s LibertyWorks advanced technology unit in Indianapolis designed the system to solve the challenge. The company then connected with ChefsFridge, a company creating an asynchronous meal-sharing platform along with exact temperature-controlled kiosks to provide a 365/24/7 neighborhood focused food sharing.

Stuart Lowry, ChefsFridge co-founder, said, “From the beginning it seemed a natural fit for our creative approach at ChefsFridge Co. The passion from the team at Rolls-Royce melded seamlessly with our energy for creating a way to help with the pandemic, using the toolbox of cooling engineers, innovation, and the build-it-from-scratch approach. It was not only exciting, but possibly revolutionary, in terms of solving this vital cold chain issue.”

Shane Bivens, ChefsFridge co-founder, said, “People think the problem is over, but we’re not even close. Initially, we’re looking at immediate global challenges that need to be met. With the help we’re seeking from additional investors and manufacturing partners, the possibilities from this point are enormous for both solving this current pandemic, and shipping and storing other vital medical and non-medical supplies. There are so many life improving medications pharma leaves on the shelf because stable cold chain transportation for extended time periods did not previously exist to move product around the globe.”

Insurance Savings for Operators of PT6 E-Series™ Enrolled in ESP™ Platinum Now Available Through New Industry Collaboration

OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN, July 27, 2021 – Pratt & Whitney Canada announced today that operators who are enrolled in the company’s Eagle Service™ Plan (ESP™) Platinum pay-per-hour engine maintenance program can now benefit from insurance premium savings for their PT6E-67XP engines, which power the Pilatus PC-12 NGX. This first-of-its-kind program is designed to simplify engine coverage, eliminate duplicate coverage and lower costs.

The ESP Platinum program for the PT6E-67XP engine covers full foreign object damage (FOD), including any wear and tear or other required repairs discovered during a FOD repair. This means customers no longer have to make a separate claim to their insurance as FOD events are typically covered through insurance policies. The collaboration between Pratt & Whitney Canada and insurers can assist operators in eliminating duplicate coverage or payments. Starr Insurance Companies is the first insurer to join with Pratt & Whitney Canada in this initiative.

“This is another example of our efforts to help operators maximize the value of their flying assets and lower their operating costs,” said John Lewis, director of customer programs, General Aviation, Pratt & Whitney Canada. “The comprehensive nature of our ESP Platinum program means that customers can confidently remove duplicate coverage from their insurance policy. We hope that such collaborations will become the standard to maximize the savings benefit to our operators.”

“We’re very happy to collaborate with Pratt & Whitney Canada on initiatives that deliver value to customers and streamline and simplify processes for them,” said Kyle Sparks, senior vice president, underwriting, for Starr Insurance Companies’ aviation division. “The ESP Platinum program is an industry-changing engine maintenance program that also provides our clients flying with these engines a way to potentially reduce their cost of coverage. Aircraft operators will appreciate participating in one of the most comprehensive plans available that provides a turnkey solution for foreign object damage events.”

Pilatus PC-12 NGX operators who are insured by Starr are eligible to receive policy coverage with or without the inclusion of engine FOD to exclude any duplicate coverage between programs.

“The comprehensive nature of ESP Platinum coverage provides a ‘one-stop-shop’ when it comes to FOD – allowing operators to avoid the expense of a deductible fee as well as reduce administrative burden in registering a claim and having to deal with multiple parties should they encounter FOD,” said Lewis. “And, since ESP has no minimum flying hours, you only pay for what you fly.”

ESP maintenance programs guarantee long-term engine maintenance costs through a planned and preventative approach to maximize flying time. The programs help enhance aircraft value by ensuring engines are maintained to the highest standard and they are transferable to the new owner at aircraft sale.

More information about our ESP Platinum maintenance program is available here.

Pratt & Whitney Canada Introduces P&WCSMART Subscription Service, Providing PT6A Engine Maintenance and Services with Simple Annual Fee

OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN, July 27, 2021 – Pratt & Whitney Canada announced today that it has expanded its portfolio of P&WCSMART Solutions – made popular with its “flat-rate” and “capped-cost” programs for major maintenance events – to include a new category of service-based solutions. The first offering under the category is the P&WCSMART Subscription Service for PT6A Engines, which provides selected scheduled and unscheduled maintenance coverage, parts replacement, and digital engine health services for engines between their hot section inspection (HSI) and overhaul.

“Our new P&WCSMART Subscription Service addresses a unique niche and need in our PT6A operator base, with a solution tailored expressly for those who are in the post-HSI stage of the engine lifecycle and not on an engine maintenance program,” said John Lewis, director of customer programs, general aviation, Pratt & Whitney Canada. “By providing a bundle of ongoing engine maintenance, services and support through an affordable annual subscription, we can help operators cost-effectively maintain their engines to ensure the highest possible asset value and performance.”

The solution’s flexible model provides options based on annual flying hours and includes the choice of one or three-year subscription terms that are renewable for select PT6A engine models. It also includes a credit toward a P&WCSMART overhaul. For customers who purchase a P&WCSMART Hot Section Inspection for their PT6A engine, enrollment for the first year of P&WCSMART Subscription Service is free.

“We’re effectively giving customers access to ongoing engine OEM maintenance and services that can be linked to their next overhaul if they wish, making this a flexible, cost-effective mid-lifecycle solution,” said Lewis. “This is also why we added a new category under our P&WCSMART solutions –encompassing both event-based maintenance and ongoing services delivery.”

An unscheduled engine removal can cost up to US$125,000 or more. Unscheduled accessory removal, troubleshooting and parts replaced during scheduled line maintenance can run thousands of dollars as can a mobile repair team response during an AOG event. The P&WCSMART Subscription Service, which starts at US$7,500 per engine per year, helps make maintenance expenses predicable, affordable, and worry-free.

Customers also benefit from digital engine health management insights, which can help reduce or avoid events altogether. The program is fully transferrable should the engine/aircraft be sold during the subscription term.

Visit our P&WCSMART Subscription Service page for more information, including a list of eligible PT6A engine models.

Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 E-Series™ Celebrates Milestone: Rapidly Achieving 15,000 Flight Hours Powering the Pilatus PC-12 NGX

OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN, July 27, 2021 – Pratt & Whitney Canada announced today that its PT6 E-Series™ engine has achieved yet another milestone, reaching 15,000 hours of flight powering the Pilatus PC-12 NGX aircraft.

“The popularity of the new PT6E-67XP-powered PC-12NGX aircraft among buyers of turboprop business aircraft has brought us to 15,000 hours in a little more than a year since it was launched in October 2019,” said Nicholas Kanellias, vice president, General Aviation, Pratt & Whitney Canada. “As the first engine in General Aviation to feature a dual-channel integrated propeller and engine control system, the PT6E-67XP engine is a key, new feature of this impressive and top-selling aircraft in the marketplace. It’s another chapter in the PT6 engine family’s long history of driving rapid, fundamental change and innovation in the industry.”

The iconic PT6 engine occupies a unique place in the history of powered aviation and is used on more than 130 different applications today. The engine family’s current flying population is more than 25,000 units and it has accumulated more than 425 million flight hours and counting. Each new model of engine is developed and designed for a mission, platform, and customer in mind, while continuing to build a more efficient, digitally connected engine with a shrinking environmental footprint.

In March 2021, the 100th PT6 E-Series engine rolled off the production line at Pratt & Whitney’s PT6 Turboprop Engine Centre of Excellence in Lethbridge, Canada. The milestone was reached more than a year into the challenges of COVID-19 and followed an exceptional effort by the P&WC team to bring the new production line into service. The PT6 E-Series engine was awarded the 2020 Laureate in the Business Aviation – Propulsion category as part of Aviation Week Network’s Annual Laureate Awards.

“In as much as milestones are important to show the rapid progress of the engine, it’s really been the feedback we’re receiving from our customers that is most gratifying,” said Kanellias. “Our Airtime customer blog recently featured an article on a new PC-12 NGX owner/pilot who reported that he enjoys the flying experience so much that he’s flown twice the number of hours he initially expected to. That’s a great testament to our propeller and engine control system and how it elevates the entire piloting experience.”

Governments must examine their border control operations to ensure sustainable economic recovery

Governments have been wrestling with the challenges of reopening borders and restarting economies while also performing their fundamental responsibility for protecting populations and national health systems from threats related to COVID-19 and its variants.

Vaccination rates have climbed while PCR and health test verification systems have evolved to a point where seamless health status verification between governments, airlines, and airports is possible. The combination presents a pivotal moment in both the fight against COVID and the struggle to kick-start idle economies.

The managed border

The best practice framework for border protection is a ‘defence-in-depth model’.

This layered approach to border security means having a sequence of screening steps in place for managing risks, with the primary goal of preventing risks from reaching a country in the first place.

One could assume that without the requisite controls in place, many risks go undetected. But COVID-19 and its variants spread quickly across borders and the impacts have been devastating. Some countries have managed these risks by closing borders quickly. Closing borders and imposing lockdowns are very effective ways to slow the spread of a virus such as COVID-19, but shutting borders also means shutting down critical parts of the economy such as aviation and tourism.

Layered approach to border management

The first layer in border protection is the visa system, which now includes Electronic Travel Authorities (ETAs), the simplest form of screening and granting permission to travel to a country. This step allows for checking against watch lists and profiles before travel.

Closer to the date of travel, governments receive Passenger Name Record (PNR) data from airlines about travel bookings, providing further opportunities for risk assessment.

As part of a passenger’s check-in procedure, airlines send more current journey and confirmed identity information in the form of Advance Passenger Information (API), or Advance Passenger Processing (APP) data. These steps provide additional opportunities to detect and manage risks. Importantly, APP is an interactive measure between airlines and governments, meaning that airlines send check-in data to a country and stand by for a Boarding Directive instruction from a government before allowing a person to travel, after check-in data is assessed against various data stores, watchlists, and profiles.

APP for incoming travelers exports the border and allows a government to prevent a passenger from traveling to their country. APP for departing travelers provides opportunities for countries and airlines to cooperate even further, with a departure country also providing assurance that passengers have met all requirements to leave, including in relation to their immigration and their health status.

Restarting borders with APP

While border management always requires alignment across a range of agencies with responsibility for immigration, customs and security for example, now national health authorities are also assuming a most critical front-line responsibility for border protection. More than ever before, countries need robust border controls in place, controls that allow essential and safe travel, and controls that can be configured quickly to treat evolving risks.

As COVID spread across the world in 2020, countries with Advanced Passenger Processing (APP) were able to quickly close travel routes from particular hotspots, reducing exposure to the virus in the early stages of the pandemic. Due to the rapid spread of this virus across many countries, it was eventually necessary for governments to close borders entirely.  Now, with the virus under control in some countries and with increasing rates of vaccination for many others, we are at a turning point. Using APP, governments have been able to safely and very selectively reopen their borders using their ability to completely control who can embark upon a journey. With the right capabilities in place, travel routes are opened and can be closed again quickly if an outbreak occurs, or virus threats change.

Where travel bans exist, governments need to deal with a range of different scenarios. While borders might be closed to certain visitors, for example, citizens need to get home. Exemptions to travel bans may also be necessary for different visa holders like permanent residents, diplomats, or health care workers. We also talk about quarantine-free ‘green flights’, and quarantine-required ‘red flights’.  How do you manage all these different cases? The answer is through APP configuration.

  • Different models for travel corridors and bubbles can be facilitated. Arrangements that rely on manual checking of PCR tests for example, can be slow and open to fraud. There are now Health Pass apps available that offer digital assurance of health status for a person, issued by testing labs and increasingly by governments. Health Passes can be integrated with APP checks for fast assurance of PCR test results or vaccination certificates prior to travel. This kind of health check will be an important component of boarding directives as travel resumes.
  • Sophisticated APP systems have configurable lists of ports and visas, that allow a government to block or allow boarding for different scenarios. In this way you can prevent boarding for a tourist from a particular place, allow boarding for a citizen or resident returning home, or potentially refer the case to the government for further consideration.
  • Where low risk countries decide to implement travel bubble arrangements, APP can be configured to allow passengers to depart on a ‘green flight’ if they have been in the country for 14 days, protecting the destination country as well as other passengers.

There are further possibilities for making use of APP as a critical border control layer, that could be relevant for both international borders and for regional travel. The most widely used platform facilitating Boarding Directives between airlines and governments has been in place for over 25 years, and is ready to support the safe reopening of borders and the resumption of travel.
